At 1338 hours on January 22, 2016, Canton Fire & Rescue was dispatched to 17 State Street in the Village of Canton for a reported fire in the basement with smoke showing. Upon arrival, crews from E-6 hit the hydrant and stretched a 2 ½” hose line to the rear of the structure. At the same time Captain Shawn McGregor and Captain Tim Gavin grabbed water cans and entered the rear of the structure. They located the fire and were able to extinguish the remaining fire with the water cans. Thanks to the quick response of FF/AEMT-CC Don Thompson and EMT-B Jared Ashley, who had been nearby in A-131 when the call was dispatched, the fire was able to be kept at bay until E-6 showed up through the use of shovels and the surrounding snow. Also on-scene to assist were SLC Car 32, SLC Car 28, Canton Village Water Department employee/Heuvelton 1st Assistant Chief Mark Basford and Village of Canton PD. The fire originated by the cellar entrance at the rear of the structure where an electrical wire had shorted out, catching the surrounding wood pile and wall on fire. Once the fire was completely out, the crews positioned vent fans in both the rear and side entrances of the house and a positive pressure fan in the front door of the house in an attempt to clear the residence of smoke. Thanks to the quick response and action of all members the fire was isolated and placed under control in a quick and safe manner. The residence suffered very minimal damage. There were no civilian or personnel injuries. All units were back in service by 1600 hours.

Units: E-6 (Donald Tracy); R-1 (Robert Grandaw); T-1 (Erik Johnson); A-133 (David Stacy)
