On 14 February, 2016, at 1912 hours, Canton Fire was dispatched to Whitman Hall at St. Lawrence University for an activated alarm. While enroute, SLU Security notified E-8 that a water pipe had broken and that there was a couple of inches of water on the floors. Upon arrival crews from E-8 went inside to find a “waterfall” in the 1st floor men’s bathroom where the water pipe had broken in the ceiling. Water continued to pour out of the ceiling as maintenance attempted to shut the water off. Once the water had successfully been shut off, crews used an attic ladder to investigate further and discovered that a fire sprinkler pipe had burst causing the cascading water throughout much of the area. R-36 was requested to the scene with squeegees and vacuums while E-8 returned to the station to get R-1 with more tools. For approximately two hours, crews assisted SLU Staff with cleaning up the mess. Once much of the scene had been cleaned up, Canton Fire was released from the scene. Canton fire was back in service by 2110 hours. Unfortunately for a couple of students, some of their personal belongings had been damaged by the water and much of the area had some level of water damage. Luckily there were no injuries.
