At 1640 hours, Canton Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the rear of the residence at 28 Judson Street. A further update from Central Dispatch advised that a State Trooper on scene was reporting heavy smoke. Assistant Chief Dan Aldous and Chief Bob Crowe arrived on scene at 1643 to find heavy smoke coming from the front door. Chief Crowe established command and advised dispatch that this was a working fire. Chief Aldous found the fire to be in the rear of the structure, still contained in what was to be the kitchen area. Engine 8 arrived on scene at 1647 and while the hose line was being stretched, firefighters entered with a water extinguisher and knocked down the fire to keep in in check until the handline could be stretched to the back yard and into the house. The fire was brought under control in a matter of minutes and crews checked for any extension beyond the fire room. The house suffered significant fire damage to the kitchen and varying degrees of smoke damage throughout the rest of the structure. No one was home at the time. A young neighbor noticed the smoke and brought it to the attention of her mother who called 911. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by members of the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team. Twenty seven members of Canton Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.
