January 24, 2010
FF/AEMT-CC Adam Leggett and EMT-B Matt Carpenter spent the weekend participating in the Ice and Cold Water Rescue-Technician class held in Lisbon and taught by NYS OFPC Rescue instructors. The skills learned include, incident command, ice safety assessment, special equipment, self rescue, rescue sequence, rope bag throwing, one and two person go rescues, sled and boat rescue, rope rigging, recognition of; and initial treatment for hypothermia, and communications. The area covered by Canton Fire Rescue contains many rivers, small ponds, and swamps which people frequently are on and around during the winter months for recreational purposes. Also, having the special equipment and properly trained personnel allows Canton Fire Rescue to assist our neighbors with mutual aid. Ice rescue is a very labor intensive task and it is very important to have as many, trained and qualified personnel with the right equipment, as possible on hand for the rescue and for back up. Many other firefighters and EMTs from departments around the county took part in this great training opportunity. We are fortunate to have outreach classes such as this available to us and we appreciate the instructors for their efforts and Lisbon Fire Dept for their hospitality.
