On May 07 at 17:19 Canton Fire and Rescue were dispatched for a two car MVA in the vicinity of 6097 US Highway 11. Canton Rescue A-131 and A-135 arrived on scene 17:23. One vehicle was found laying on the passenger's side, one occupant in critical condition requiring rapid extrication. The occupant of the other vehicle was stable but also required extrication. The vehicle on its side was stabilized by Johnson's Towing prior to the arrival of Rescue 1. When Rescue 1 arrived on scene at 1727, firefighters utilized hydraulic extrication tools to remove the roof from the vehicle, providing EMS personnel access to the patient. Members were then able to extricate the patient onto a backboard for evaluation and, unfortunately, was subsequently pronounced deceased. Fire crews then extricated the second patient whose legs were pinned underneath the steering wheel. That patient was placed on a backboard, removed to the ambulance, and transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for further evaluation and care. Fire department personnel remained on scene until the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was able to conclude their investigation and vehicles removed from the scene. Traffic was detoured around the scene via the Cowan Road, Brewer Road, and SH 68 by CFD personnel and mutual aid units from West Potsdam Fire. Eighteen members responded to the incident with all units back in service at 21:55.
