Roof Fire At Former Family Dollar Store
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Fire Chief Robert Crowe
May 12, 2021

At 1817 hours the tones were activated for a possible structure fire at the former Family Daollar store at 2 Main Street. Dispatch advised the Canton PD called in the fire and were on scene reporting smoke from the roof. Chiefs Crowe and McGregor arrived on scene within a minute and found smoke issuing from the roof. Chief Crowe assumed command and requested another alarm for a working fire. The building is undergoing a renovation, including a total roof replacement. Engine 6 was first to arrive on scene at 1823, and was directed to lay 5-inch large diameter hose from the hydrant at the corner of Main and Miner Streets. Tower 1 was directed to the front of the store to set up for roof access. Members utilized the K-tool to remove the front door lock and gain access to the interior of the building. Chief McGregor was assigned to lead interior operations. Once inside, firefighters determined that the fire was located between the ceiling and the roof in an area where roof decking appeared to have been removed. A handline was stretched to the interior and crews began to pull the ceiling and extinguish the smoldering debris that fell until they reached an area that was unburned. Additional visual checks , along with deploying the Thermal Imaging Camera, determined that there was no additional fire extension. Crews picked up and turned the building over to the owner. Twenty six members responded and all Canton Fire units were back in service at 1959. It is believed that the roof decking removal that had been taking place during the day had caused smoldering debris to fall into the insulation above the ceiling. That smoldered for some time prior to igniting.

Units: Engine 6, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Engine 8, Ambulance 131

Mutual Aid: Canton PD, SLC Car 4
